I’m presenting a program of workplace films at Metrograph on Saturday with a talkback salon. (Buy a ticket!) One of the films is MARA MCKEVITT’s Val which obliterates concepts like “authorship” and the “self.” It’s a workplace fantasy about killing your own boss based on a performance piece Mckevitt engineered where she was impersonating her own boss. This was a performance Mckevitt was staging in private — the people she was interacting with as “Val” were mostly unaware there was even a performance going on: “Mara was always complaining about her boss but I think her boss was just her in a wig.” ACTORS from the film EMILY ALLAN and ALICIA NOVELLA VASQUEZ will join Mckevitt and I for an on-stage discussion.
