On Monday I launched a new biannual publication devoted to book reviews and author interviews, The Whitney Review of New Writing. It’s available online and at McNally Jackson locations in New York (with more retail locations coming). We celebrated at Nine Orchard Hotel with readings by review contributors Bobbi Salvör Menuez, Eric Schwartau, Geoffrey Mak, Mayah Lovell, Maya Martinez, and Olivia Kan-Sperling. The debut issue also features Brontez Purnell, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Bruce Benderson, Michael Bullock, Tiana Reid, Micaela Durand, Tamara Faith Berger, Samuel R. Delany, Liara Roux, LA Warman, Philippa Snow, Ben Fama, Fuck Theory, A. S. Hamrah, Shiv Kotecha, Eugene Kotlyarenko, and many more. It’s designed and art directed by Immanuel Yang.
I spoke with author and critic Lynne Tillman about the new review and the broader state of literary criticism for Interview Magazine:
MALLETT: When I considered the audience, I was imagining there must be people out there that like what I like. A lot of the books are a little queer, a little slutty, a little experimental. Books that you might not come across.
TILLMAN: It’s a very good mix. And the attitude of your review is iconoclastic, but not in a hipster way. It’s a more honestly unorthodox approach, and I like that.
